Dark circles and Eye circles are dark blemishes around the eyes. It also called is bags under the eyes. Dark eye circles are a sign of iron defiency, anemia. Dark under eye circles can be caused by fatigue, poor circulation, extra-thin skin under the eyes, hyper-pigmentation, illness or allergies. Dark circles are likely to become more noticeable and permanent with age. Excess folds of skin under the eyes will also make dark circles more pronounced. Dark circles under the eyes are usually an inherited trait. The skin under the eye is very thin. When blood passes through the large veins close to the surface of the skin it can produce a bluish tint. The more transparent the skin -- also an inherited trait -- the darker the circles appear. Any condition that causes the eyes to itch can contribute to darker circles due to rubbing or scratching the skin around them. Hay fever sufferers particularly will notice under-eye "smudges" during the height of the allergy season. Some food allergies can also cause the area under the eyes to appear darker.

Dark circles can be caused by several factors. Premary cause is Genetics Darkness under the eyes runs in families and is more prominent on fair skin. Second is Lack of sleep Poor-quality sleep causes blood vessels to become more visible through the skin. Third is Sun exposure can trigger "age spots" around the eyes and weaken the skin, which can contribute to dark circles. Fourth is Increased fluid retention The blood vessels under the eyes can become engorged and dilated (dietary salt and smoking are common causes) and Aging causes the fat pad below the eye to thin, producing a sunken appearance. Another cause may be bad blood circulation. Dark eye circles could be a sign of excessive loss of water from the body ( dehydration ). Any medications that cause blood vessels to dilate can cause circles under the eyes to darken. Because the skin under the eyes is very delicate, any increased blood flow shows through the skin. Extreme weight loss also can cause this sunken look.
