Urethral Syndrome - Symptoms and Treatment


The irritating symptoms that accompany Urethral Syndrome include: urinary frequency, urgency and burning in addition to possible low back pain, suprapubic pain, and hesitant or slowed urinary stream.Urethral syndrome, or frequency-dysuria syndrome, is characterized by frequency, dysuria and suprapubic discomfort without any objective finding of urological abnormalities. Dysuria or constant suprapubic discomfort is partially relieved by voiding. It is not fair to say that urethral syndrome is not due to infection because many physicians believe that it is due to a low grade infection of the Skene's glands on the sides and bottom of the urethra .

Symptoms of Urethral Syndrome

The symptoms of urethral syndrome are:

  • pain and discomfort in the lower abdomen
  • a frequent urge to urinate
  • in women, pain around the vulvar region
  • pain with urination

Causes of Urethral Syndrome

Urethral stenosis was thought to be the cause of urethral syndrome. The most common cause of NSU is a microorganism called Chlamydia. Urethral syndrome can be a very frustrating and upsetting disease. Often it is difficult to know the exact cause of non-specific urethritis.the causes are

  • The urethral stenosis diagnosis, along with the serial urethral dilations used historically to treat the condition, is appropriate in a very small minority of patients.
  • The incidence of interstitial cystitis is much greater in females than in males.
  • Unfortunately, a unified alternative etiology for urethral syndrome has not been identified.
  • There are other non-infective causes that should be considered such as trauma, allergies , and anatomical features like diverticula and post surgical scarring
  • To accomplish a pregnancy, the intricate processes of ovulation and fertilization need to work just right.
  • Undetected bacterial or viral infection of the urethra
  • Irritation of the urethra
  • Specifically in women, irritation of the urethra caused by:
    • Feminine hygiene sprays or douches
    • Sanitary napkins
  • Structural problems, such as narrowing of the urethra

Treatment of Urethral Syndrome

Treatment of infertility depends on the cause, the duration of the problem, the age of the partners and their specific wishes.Treatment may include:

  • Medication:1.Antibiotics given if your doctor thinks urethral syndrome may be due to an undetected infection. 2.Phenazopyridine – May be given by your doctor to ease discomfort while urinating.
  • Behavioral therapy, including biofeedback, meditation, and hypnosis, has been used with some success.
  • Avoidance of Irritants
  • Surgery
  • Dietary therapy is geared primarily at increasing urinary pH.

Prevention tips

  • Wear cotton underwear, which allows better air circulation than nylon. Pantyhose should have a cotton crotch.
  • Avoid tight clothes in the genital area, such as control-top pantyhose and tight jeans.
  • Avoid bicycling often or for long periods of time, especially if you have a long-nose bicycle seat.
